Today is the US Coast Guard’s 227th Birthday!

The US Coast Guard is one of the eligible maritime services for membership in the Naval Order (NOUS).  If you reside in Washington, Idaho or Oregon and if you or a relative have served in the Coast Guard, please consider joining NOUS Northwest.

Described by the service’s Historian, “The United States Coast Guard, one of the country’s five armed services, is a unique agency of the federal government.  We trace our history to 4 August 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling.  Known variously through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service, we expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew….” More USCG history is available at the Historian’s website at 227th BIRTHDAY.

Closer to home for NOUS Northwest companions is USCG Sector Puget Sound.  From their extensive website at  SECTOR PUGET SOUND, a great deal can be learned about local operations in the Puget Sound.

To begin, “On July 30, 2010, U.S. Coast Guard Group Port Angeles and U.S. Coast Guard Sector Seattle combined to become U.S Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound. The purpose of this merger is to bring the operational control of all Coast Guard resources located within the present Captain of the Port Puget Sound area of responsibility under one command for the execution of all Coast Guard missions.”

Happy birthday USCG!
