In his remarks on June 2, 2017, Admiral John M. Richardson, Chief of Naval Operations, cited four “strokes of luck” in the Battle of Midway: 1. Breaking the code, 2. the presence of Yorktown, 3. Nautilus delaying Arashi and 4. McClusky finding the carriers.
But he concluded that “It might be tempting to attribute the victory at Midway to luck – a series of lucky strokes that almost add up to a miracle. But as with all things, a team makes its own luck.” Read Admiral Richardson’s complete speech HERE.
